The IT-Blocks Higher Education Key Indicators system has been built to provide Universities with a ready-made
solution that covers most of its academic KPIs. With more than 80 KPIs implemented in the system, it provides
a comprehensive solution for universities
The system is composed of many integrated components that integrate with universities current management
information systems as data sources. The integration system or Extract Transform & Load (ETL) module extracts
the data from data sources, transforms it to the required format and loads it into a data warehouse.
However,
to avoid rare cases when the data sources are not available or not accessible from the current
management information systems, the solution is occupied with data-entry interface to help enter data items
manually to the data warehouse. A pre-designed data warehouse is the core of the solution where data is stored.
Using MS-SQL Server capabilities, data marts are built and extracted from the data warehouse to facilitate
and speed the data retrieval processes thus increasing system performance. The analytical front-end application has
a graphical user interface built using latest Microsoft technologies of Silverlight.
The interface includes many
dashboards that present the KPIs to the user in a very comprehensive format with the capability to drill down and
drill through for more information details
The solution architecture is composed of the following:
Current university databases/systems should be analyzed to discover the data elements to be extracted and transformed
to the format of the DW storage. In case there are not any databases available, we will develop an interface to enter
the data directly to the DW.
Integration system will do the ETL job. ETL is the process of extracting, transforming, and loading the
data from different data sources or the developed data entry interface into the warehouse.
The software responsible for performing this process is integrated with the DW engine or just integrated
tools for writing the ETL routines of the warehousing process
A central store to hold primitive, aggregated and historical data that fulfills the higher
education model developed by IT-Blocks

The front end analytical application presents dashboards that include KPIs, scorecards and rich analytical information
retrieved from the data marts with interactive rich format reports on the SharePoint portal.
The front end application can either be implemented standalone or on SharePoint server as required.
